The Art Nouveau movement in Germany—called Jugendstil or Young-style—was launched by Jugend Magazine. Jugend was weekly cultural publication founded in 1896 by Georg Hirth.
This particular issue of the magazine was published in its founding year. The cover was very avant garde, decorated with strong Art Nouveau ornaments that truly depict the style of the movement. The forms on the cover are very reminiscent to some of those produced during the 1960's.
The magazine was successful in capturing the a very strong German audience, with over 200 000 readers per week in its first year. This fact makes Jugend magazine a very important piece in the history of graphic design.
